Memories of
John Keplinger
by Patrick Gaines
|
John Keplinger was a good
guy. I remember our working together selling
newspapers at the Kwik-Check (however you spell
it, later known as Winn Dixie) in the shopping
center at the intersection of Broward Blvd and
State Road 7. He lived over near Westwood
Heights Elementary, I lived in Melrose Park
between his house and the grocery store, so he
would stop by my house and "pick me up"
sometimes.
Each of us would sit at one of the two entrances
of the grocery store and hawk our papers. We
would alternate as to who got what entrance to
be fair to both of us. I think that doing that
was John's idea, as I remember it. He liked to
ride my bicycle, I liked to ride his, for some
reason. We almost traded bikes once, but my dad
nixed that idea.. |

John was 2 years older than I was,
but didn't seem to matter to him, and we spent our share
of time around the Keplinger house during the very early
1960's. John's having a hot sister (Carol, I graduated
with her at Nova '67 - I remember one time when she
ended up in the swimming pool at our house, clothing and
all, funny story...lol) didn't hurt any either, even at
the tender age of 12.
Every one of us probably remembers someone from our
early years that we thought was a REALLY cool person and
still remember them fondly. John Keplinger was one of
those for me (along with another person from this same
class - Bob Ball).
Rest in peace, John...
