If you belong to the Stranahan
HS Class of 1965, and if you attended seventh grade at New River
Junior High School, you are also a member of New River's first-ever seventh grade class! While a permanent facility was being built on Riverland Road,
a temporary school site was set-up at the Naval Air Station adjacent to the Fort Lauderdale airport.
I remember that the "campus" was quite large
and scattered. My
teachers that very first year were: Mr. Robert Rosell -
Science and Home Room; Mr. Roger Herb - History; Ms.
Lois Smutz - English; Ms. Nelson - Art , and Mr. Robert Hauck
- mathematics (I recall that Mr. Hauck was later called into the
army during the Berlin crisis). For some reason, I cannot
remember my PE teacher's name, but can picture his face clearly.
During that first year, the school mascot name was "The Tarpons" and
the school colors were orange and white. The school
newspaper was called the Himmarshee Herald. An interesting story:
The following year when I was in 8th grade, a contest was held
to select a new mascot name. Two people submitted "The Warriors"
and I was one of them! It just so happened that
the other person was a guy named Wayne Pimentel who lived down the street from me!
He accused me of stealing his idea, but to the best of my
recollection it was a coincidence.
Anyway, the winner was supposed to receive a prize of some kind.
Suffice it to say, neither of us received a thing!
Those
of you that remember Mr. Schillberg will recall what a
colorful character he was. He would always say:
"The good Lord willing, I'm gonna' live to be 90!"
He passed away in 1992 at the age of 72. Mr.
Schillberg is pictured on this site as a 6th grade
teacher at Croissant Park Elementary School. To
