Friday, August 25, 2006: It was the first time I had visited Fort Lauderdale in more than thirteen years. My brother was at the airport to meet me when my plane arrived at 2:30 that afternoon. Less than an hour later, I was standing on campus at my old Alma Mater, which incidentally, was the first time I had set foot there since I left some forty years ago! I met with Jean Smith who organized a tour with the Assistant Principal, Mr. Alan Thompson.

I was very impressed with Mr. Thompson.  He instinctively knew how much this visit meant to us and went well beyond the call of duty to see that all our needs were met. He provided a golf cart and escorted us wherever we wanted to go. He listened with interest to the tales we had to tell and even shared a few tales of his own. The hour was getting late, but he told us: "Take all the time you want .... see everything you want to see!" What a great guy! I am satisfied that Stranahan is in good hands with Mr. Thompson!

As one would expect, a lot of changes have taken place over the years. I was surprised to learn about a fire that necessitated a major  re-modeling of the administrative offices and adjacent rooms. Today this area bears no resemblance to its former appearance. The open hallway that once served as the main entry from SW 5th Place is now enclosed and serves as a foyer for the auditorium. There you will see a portrait of Mr. Haun hanging above a trophy case on the east wall.

Though many changes have taken place over the years, there  are still many familiar scenes, and yes, a few reminders that the Class of '65 was once there. In the gym for example, banners are on display commemorating track and golf championships won by our class. I also saw a copy of the 1965 El Pasado on the shelf in the Library!
It was a great experience to be at Stranahan once again. I recalled many memories as I walked the campus that day, and for a brief moment I felt young again. If I could only turn back the hands of time! After the tour, I had just enough time to shower and change for the Class of 66 Reunion, which was great experience unto itself.  Sadly, it was all over too soon, and come Monday morning I found myself back at work in Oklahoma City. I was, however, much richer for what I had just experienced!
